Printer Resolution

Dots per inch

Pentax MZ-S, FA*80-200mm f2.8, Kodak Elite Chrome 100EC

Better printers have higher resolution: More dots per inch.

  •   400dpi is the bare minimum for photographic prints.

  •   More than around 1500dpi gives little if any benefit.

Higher printer resolution will give you better tonal quality, particularly in large areas of uniform color and density (like blue skies, for example) and smoother transitions from one color to another.
