Graduated Filters

You can use image editing software to change pixel values in just part of a picture.

A common use for this technique is mimicking the effect of a graduated neutral density filter to correct for different exposure levels of sky and foreground.

Here, the upper half of the image is darkened and the lower half is brightened.
