Image File Formats
Why choosy photographers don't choose GIF
Photographic image files are bitmaps: They are essentially collections of pixels along with
"mapping" information that tells the computer how to arrange them.

TIFF
• Most common format in print publishing.
• Very large file size. Embedded metadata.
JPEG
• Small file size: Useful for email/web photos.
• User-selectable file size/image quality.
GIF
• Limited to 256 colors.
• Useful for web graphics, logos, etc. — not photographs.
BMP
• Specific to Windows computers.
• The disadvantages of TIFF without the advantages ;-)
PNG
• Versatile web graphic format.
• Many color depth & file size options. Transparency.
• Poor support in many older web browsers still in use.

There are many other formats (PCX, PSD, etc.) for specific software and applications.
