Why choosy photographers don't choose GIF


Photographic image files are bitmaps: They are essentially collections of pixels along with "mapping" information that tells the computer how to arrange them.

TIFF

   • Most common format in print publishing.
   • Very large file size. Embedded metadata.

JPEG

   • Small file size: Useful for email/web photos.
   • User-selectable file size/image quality.

GIF

   • Limited to 256 colors.
   • Useful for web graphics, logos, etc. — not photographs.

BMP

   • Specific to Windows computers.
   • The disadvantages of TIFF without the advantages ;-)

PNG

   • Versatile web graphic format.
   • Many color depth & file size options. Transparency.
   • Poor support in many older web browsers still in use.

There are many other formats (PCX, PSD, etc.) for specific software and applications.
