Blurring

Blurring is the reverse of sharpening: It looks at the difference between adjacent pixels and the transition at edges.

It can be useful for hiding scanning or image compression artefacts and for various artistic or technical effects.

There are many different kinds of blurring tools available, which use a variety of mathematical techniques. Your image editing software will have information about the blurring algorithms it can use.

(In this demonstration, blurring has been applied only to the background, rather than the entire image. This is a typical use of this feature.)
